Feb 27 2025

January and February 2025 updates

Here is an overview of the new videos that are available for January and February 2025:

  • Sabre form: To compensate for the delay, we make a big jump in the form:
    • 19 Sabre form – Picking a star on the left to Returning horse carrying bell
    • 20 Sabre form – Embracing the moon to Rowing the boat with the current
    • 21 Sabre form – Flying oblique style to Sweeping a thousand soldiers
    • 22 Sabre form – Shooting star chasing the moon to Chop the tiger
  • Sabre Applications – Hanging the golden bell on the left to Retrieving the moon fro mthe sea 01. I show two variations of this technique. One that closely follows the form, the other more adapted to specific circumstances.
  • Q&A 50 – Stilness defeats motion. There are many sayings and proverbs in Tai Chi Chuan. In this video I explain the nuances of “Stillness defeats motion.”

December 2024 updates

Here is an overview of the new videos that are available for December 2024:

  • 18 Sabre form – Swivel and chop to Sweeping a thousand soldiers. A small step forward in the form, but some detail work might surprise you in how difficult it is to get right (hint: alignment…)
  • Sabre drills: 06 – Swivel hiding sabre – Manipulation details and 07 Retrieving the moon from the sea The first shows some details on how to use the wrist and the second can be done as a fast-paced drill to quickly get many reps in. I show two variations.
  • Q&A 49 – Which hand forms to focus on and why? The question was asked to clear up some confusion as to how our hand forms work, what you should focus on and how.

September 2023 Updates

Here is an overview of the new videos that are available as of September 2023:

    • Long Form: “26 Turn body and swing fist to Completion style”: With this video, we get to the end of the Long Form. The whole series goes into detail on how to learn the form at the beginner level. In future videos, I’ll show more advanced versions, but as of next month, we’ll start with the saber form.
    • Self-Defense – Golden cockerel stands on one leg to Step back and repulse monkey: This application starts with an upward deflection, which we don’t often use. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value as it can be practical in a few specific situations.
    • Q&A 37 – Why such an emphasis on details in the forms: There are many misunderstandings about the intricacies of the form and why we focus on perhaps seemingly small details. But there are reasons for that and I explain some of them now.

August 2023 Updates

Here is an overview of the new videos that are available as of August 2023:

    • Long Form: “25 Snake creeps down to Slap the face”: Now we come to the last long section that this easy to follow. It is a big chunk you already learned in the short form, with one small change at the end. In the next video, we will cover the final part of the long form and close it off.
    • Self-Defense – As if shutting a door 02: More detail on this application and a look at how this is performed at varying stages of experience and training.
    • Q&A 36 – Mistakes to avoid for long-term success in training?: If you started with this program a few years ago, it’s possible you’re getting into a slump: progress seems slow or non-existent. This is where many students make a series of mistakes that hinder their long-term success in this style. In this video, I talk about the most common errors to avoid.

July 2023 Updates

Here is an overview of the new videos that are available as of July 2023:

  • Long Form: “24 Step up to punch the groin to Single Whip” This section is the last of the short ones before we get to the end of the Long Form. Step up to punch the groin has similarities to a previously learned technique, but the difference is significant and throws many students off at first.
  • Self-Defense – Flying oblique low: The low part of FLyinf Oblique can be used effectively against a front kick. Interestingly, the form and application are relatively close to each other.
  • Q&A 35 – The value of pushing hands competitions?: There are varying opinions on this topic and in this video I share mine. In short, yes there is value, but there are a few caveats to consider.
